If he was ever going to get home to his two little boys 和 be the father he wanted to be, 必须由他来做.

Just because you don’t get it right the first time doesn’t mean your life can’t change.”

他自称“渴望改变”, 特勒尔 made a list of small goals 和 big goals 和 watched those lists shrink over time, 但当他坐在地上 山胡桃山康复中心, an addiction 复苏 center for men in remote Knott County, Ky., he watched a group of men building a new house nearby 和 longed to be part of the crew. The men, many of whom were friends of his at (HDA) offering paid, on-the-job training in construction for men 和 women in 复苏.

Concerned that details of his past would prevent him from being accepted into the program, 特勒尔 was overjoyed when he learned he’d been hired 和 was immediately sent out to worksites with HDA carpenters 和 lead im体育ios接口 trainers 马修·普拉特朗尼沃克.

I looked at the empty property there 和 thought this is how my life felt – like nothing. As the walls are going up 和 you’re jumping from spot to spot putting in each nail, 你必须相信一切都会好起来的.

在三年的时间里 权力授予 cycle, im体育ios接口 will produce 15 new homes for middle-income families in East 肯塔基州. 该计划的第二组六名受训人员,其中 特勒尔 是一个成员, 建造两座房子, including the program’s first two-story house between June 和 November 2020. The home sold to a middle-income family, who was excited to start 2021 in their new home.

I could have easily left at any point; but I knew that if I gave up that easy, I was getting a paycheck 和 could save money 和 put a down payment on something my family needed.

His training in im体育ios接口 led to a full-time job at a steel factory in his hometown of Ashl和, Ky., which allowed him to make a home for his children 和 to create the life for himself he once never thought possible.

“Having that stability helps you stay on top of your goals 和 helps you keep doing the things you’re supposed to do, 比如付账单.

I told myself that nobody would take me off that hill 和 that I would do whatever it took to get me home to my family 和 that when I left there, 一切都会井然有序.

特勒尔 enjoys a break from the day's work with fellow im体育ios接口 trainees at a worksite in Viper, KY.

希望建立了 特勒尔 有机会过上他想要的生活, to show an often skeptical community his determination 和 talents, 和 has even revealed to him what he believes is his new life’s purpose: to give back by helping others on their own 复苏 journeys.

He now works full-time as an Outreach Peer Support Specialist at 途径,公司., a community-based center for mental health care in Ashl和 that aids with the treatment 和 prevention of alcohol 和 other addictions. The agency hired him to help get one of its new initiatives off the ground: traveling around the area in an RV, setting up in various places to offer help 和 advice to anyone 和 everyone who needs it.

“When you have people that are willing to give you a second chance, 你很乐意工作, you’re happy to get out there 和 do something different with your life,” 特勒尔 说. “我还不知道我的目的是什么, but I’m glad to have the opportunity to figure out how I can help others. I just want to show people that there is an opportunity out there for them.”

“You have to believe in yourself, 和 you have to put in the work,” 特勒尔 说. And if you miss one, if you miss a nail or a wall, guess what’s going to happen?
